The million-dollar question for most small business owners this time of year is how to carry the momentum of your holiday sales into the new year.

Building your contact list is the biggest and most effective way to help increase sales in the future. You’ll be able to send your newfound customers special deals, sales and a thank you note when they make a purchase from your store.

You can also:

  • Run a contest — Use social media to run a contest where you offer a gift card, or another prize to those who see the post or status. There are companies out there that will help you create a game plan on how to schedule automatically generated social posts to help promote the contest.
  • Reach out to your network — Don’t be afraid to reach out to the people that support your business, like friends, family and even suppliers. These connections are a good seed list that will hopefully pass along your message to those they think might be interested in your goods and services. Be sure to add whomever they send the message to to your contact list for the next wave of communications.
  • Promote signing up — Be sure to have an email sign up feature displayed on each page of your website. Let your visitors know if they sign up they’ll get promotional emails that will save them money. The best performing sign up programs are the ones that ask the customers to do the least amount of work, — like a direct-fill option that allows customers to type in their email without being sent to another page on your site.
  • Offer an instant coupon — offer any visitor to your site a downloadable coupon that they’ll receive when they provide their email.

The point of gathering the contact information is to have customers buy from you again, giving you a reliable source of revenue as you grow your business. Treat any contact information like gold and don’t overuse it to the point of customers thinking they’re being harassed. You want to have a scheduled communication cadence, via email, social media and phone that is beneficial to both you and your customers.
