10 Thanksgiving Day Facts

1.) The first Thanksgiving in America actually occurred in 1541, when Francisco Vasquez de Coronado and his expedition held a Thanksgiving celebration in Palo Duro Canyon in the Texas panhandle.

2.) U.S. President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving Day a national holiday in 1863.

3.) Americans eat approximately 736 million pounds of turkey each Thanksgiving.

4.) Contrary to popular belief, the amount of tryptophan in turkeys isn't responsible for making us tired. Instead, scientists blame our drowsiness on alcohol and the sheer caloric size of an average feast.

5.) There are seven million wild turkeys living in the U.S.

6.) While wild turkeys can fly in bursts at 55 miles an hour, domesticated turkeys can't fly at all.

7.) The first Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade was held in 1924 and featured live animals from the Central Park Zoo.

8.) Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the official bird of the United States. He felt that the eagle had a "bad moral character" and wanted to honor the turkey as a "native" bird with relevance to our nation's history of overeating.

9.) The tradition of pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys began in 1947, though Abraham Lincoln is said to have informally started the practice when he pardoned his son's pet turkey.

10.) Cranberries were first used by Native Americans to treat arrow wounds and to dye clothes.

All of us here at PayAnywhere wish you a Happy Thanksgiving and a joyous holiday season.
