A pre-authorization allows you to prepare a sale, placing a hold on the funds, but not processing the sale immediately. This is a two-part process and you must close the pre-authorization to complete the transaction.
Notes:
- Pre-authorizations are valid for 5 business days from the authorization date.
- Gift cards are not supported for pre-auths.
- Completed pre-auth amount must be equal or lesser to the original pre-auth request.
- You cannot adjust tips on pre-auths.
- Tax is calculated at the time the pre-auth is created. Ex: If you do a custom amount when closing the pre-auth, the tax does not get updated.
- Cash discounting, tax, and tip are not included when completing custom pre-auths.
To create a pre-auth:
- From the Menu, tap New Pre-Auth.
- Create a new pre-auth in the same manner in which you would a new sale (i.e., add items to the cart).
- Select Charge Pre-Auth and follow the prompts to save the pre-auth.
- If tips are enabled, they can be accepted at this point. This does not apply to tip adjust (Sign & Tip on Printed Receipt setting).
- Receipt indicates that a pre-auth was taken.
To close or complete a pre-auth:
This is to close the pre-authorization request and process the payment.
- Open the Menu and tap on Transactions.
- Select the transaction.
- Under Actions, tap on Complete Pre-Auth.
- Tap Submit.
- If needed, modify the pre-auth by editing the cart.
- If you enter a custom amount to complete the pre-auth, cash discounting, tax, and tip amounts are not included.
- Follow the prompts to complete the transaction.
- Receipt indicates that the pre-auth was adjusted as "Adjusted Pre-auth."
To cancel a pre-auth:
This is to cancel the pre-authorization request.
- Go to Transactions and select the open pre-auth you would like to cancel.
- Tap the options icon and select Cancel PreAuth.
- Tap Yes to confirm the cancelation. A confirmation message will appear.
- Receipt indicates the pre-auth was canceled.
