The event, hosted by Crain's Detroit at The Henry in Dearborn, Mich., included a panel focusing on David vs. Goliath success stories and an awards ceremony honoring this year's entrepreneur winners.

Gardner spoke on the panel and shared PayAnywhere's success story. The following is an excerpt from Crain's Detroit's news coverage:

"Marc Gardner, founder, North American Bancard LLC and PayAnywhere LLC, said the Troy-based company differentiated itself from larger financial services companies by nimble decision-making. Some large organizations are paralyzed waiting for board decisions, while his company had access to capital and quick decision-making on its side in rollout to merchant customers.

PayAnywhere's performance has exceeded expectations by all metrics, he said. North American Bancard is a processor of credit card payments, processing $16 billion of transactions annually for more than 250,000 merchants nationwide.

Gardner launched PayAnywhere in 2011 with an app and its own small device to allow mobile phones to process payments for merchants. It competes with much larger competitors, such as Square Inc."
